Warhammer World Series 2013

Last year we tried running a tournament with a difference, and it went so well that it is happening again this year, in an expanded 2-day format. Here is the player pack....

16-17 November
Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition rules
1500pt pre-determined armies (read below)
2 days, 7 games
$50 (late entry)

Timetable
The tournament will be running to a relatively tight schedule, with 2 hours allotted per game. No games will be permitted to run over-time, as only 10 minutes have been left to get everything in order for the following round. Please ensure you are on time both days, as late arrivals cause problems for everyone involved.

The regular venue of the Hampton Games Club:

Hampton Community Centre, 8 Willis St, Hampton, Victoria 3188

Catering is not provided by the club but there are a number of restaurants/take-away stores within walking distance including numerous bakeries, pizza restaurants, fish and chip stores, a Subway, a Mexican place and a Safeway. There are also banks including a Westpac, an NAB and an ANZ for any money you may need to withdraw during the tournament. Hampton train and bus station is located right next to the community centre, so using public transport is an option.

Armies
The Warhammer World Series is not your normal tournament. Players do not bring an army with them on the day. Instead, each table will have 2 armies and a scenario pre-determined and the players will dice off to choose which army to use. Every effort will be made to ensure the armies playing off on each table are well-matched and should provide for an interesting game.

If you would like to volunteer your painted army (or armies) to be used for the event, please contact the TO using the details below. Bear in mind that other people will be using your models, although obviously they will be expected to take care of them. We do have access to a large number of armies, however more variety is always helpful.

Games
Players are given two hours in which to complete their games. There is a break of at least 10 minutes between games to allow the Tournament Organiser (TO) to enter scores and prepare for the next round.

The first round will be a random draw, after which the event will be use a "Swiss Chess" system; you will never play the same opponent twice. If at all possible, you will not play on the same table twice either.

Before each game, both players should look at both army lists and ensure they understand what everything does. They should then roll off, with the winner choosing which army to use. The loser of the roll-off has the following benefit, depending upon the scenario:
  • Battleline - chooses table sides
  • Dawn Attack - chooses table sides and sets up first
  • Battle for the Pass - chooses table sides
  • Blood and Glory - chooses table sides
  • Meeting Engagement - chooses table sides and sets up first
  • Watchtower – chooses whether or not to control the Watchtower

Play the game in good spirit, and do not stall for time. Any person deemed stalling for time to avoid a loss or cement a win will be penalised heavily. Games must be finished on or before the two hour deadline; warnings will be given for 30 minutes, 15 minutes and 5 minutes. A clock will be up on stage to make it easy to see how much time is remaining. If necessary, you may have to calculate victory conditions / victory points from the end of an earlier turn than the one prescribed to end the game, but you cannot run overtime. Please play briskly and remind your opponent if he is taking too long. This is to ensure that we can enter all results and determine the next round so that we do not fall behind schedule.

Rules Disputes
All rules disputes should be resolved in one of three ways. Either look in the appropriate rulebook, roll a D6 for it, or ask a TO. The TO will either show you the relevant passage in the appropriate rulebook, or ask you to roll a D6 for it. Just because you disagree on a rule does not mean your opponent is a bad sport. It is in the way he handles the dispute, and accepts if he is wrong, that you can see his sportsmanship. Many people have different interpretations or house rules that are not used at tournaments, and these will be resolved as stated above. The TO's word is final, and arguing after a decision has been made may incur penalties.

Scoring
Scoring at this tournament will be very simple. With no composition, painting or sports scores to worry about, everything will come down to battle scores. Each game is scored out of 20 points, so after 7 games the total scores will be out of 140.

In the event of a tie we will use head-to-head records to determine a winner. If 2 of you are winning the tournament and manage to play out a draw, I will throw something at you. That is all. You have been warned.

Battle scores
Battle points will be scored for each game based on the Victory Points (VP) difference between the two players. All the normal bonuses for table quarters, captured standards, etc apply.

VP Difference Battle Points
0-100 10-10
101-250 11-9
241-400 12-8
401-550 13-7
551-700 14-6
701-850 15-5
851-1000 16-4
1001-1200 17-3
1201-1350 18-2
1351-1500 19-1
1501+ 20-0

Sportsmanship
It is expected that everyone who attends the tournament is capable of playing the game in a friendly and sportsman-like manner. Generally we include a questionnaire-based sportsmanship score after each game, but most players never have an issue and it just adds to the paperwork. As such, this time there will be no sportsmanship component to the scores.

If you have any issues with your opponent, try to address it on the spot – it may just be a misunderstanding. If there is still a problem, bring it to the TO straight away. One way or another, I will deal with it. Players who have continual issues or display a seriously poor attitude may be asked to leave. Obviously this is a worst-case scenario, but I'm keeping the option open. Just because there are no sports scores does not mean people should have to put up with jerks.

After the last game of the tournament, players will be asked to nominate 3 opponents for the Best Sportsman award (ranked in descending order). These marks will have no bearing on the overall winner; they are only used to select the winner of the Best Sportsman award.

Scenarios
Each table will have a pre-defined scenario which the players will be expected to play. Expect to see all 6 scenarios represented somewhere.

The modifications are as follows:

Battle Line:
As per rulebook.

Dawn Attack:
As per rulebook.

Battle for the Pass:
As per rulebook.

Blood and Glory:
Deployment as per the scenario. When an army breaks, the game ends. Work out the victory points as normal for Battle Line; however, all units in the “broken” army count as slain. Basically just use the full cost of the broken army, as well as any bonus points that were acquired from it before the army broke. Points are not gained for any standards or the general if they are alive at the point of breaking.

Meeting Engagement:
As per rulebook.

The Watchtower:
Rules as per the scenario in the rulebook, with the exception that victory points are used at the end of the game. The player controlling the Watchtower at the end of the battle gains an extra 800 victory points.

Terrain
All hills will be standard hills and considered open ground for the sake of movement. All forests and rivers will follow the rules for Mysterious Terrain given on pages 119-121 in the rulebook.

Prizes
Prizes are offered for:

1st Place Overall
2nd Place Overall
3rd Place Overall
Best Sportsman (players' choice)
